Tuesday Afternoon Visit To Norfolk State’s Marty Miller Baseball Field

After taking several exploratory trips into and out of Norfolk via I-264 these past few months, I couldn’t help notice the campus of Norfolk State University. You can see the campus clear as day from both sides of the highway, especially those bright greens! I have “circled” the campus and baseball field on my list of places to visit and experience for some time now. Yesterday, with the weather improving out of the 20s to the mid-40s, I had a chance to check out the campus and baseball field known as Marty L. Miller Field.

Just off E Virginia Beach Blvd, Park Ave is the entrance to Norfolk State University. It was a busy Tuesday afternoon on campus, classes in session, workers active with projects around campus when I pulled into the parking lot behind the baseball field. I took a short walk around the wooden fence, spotted the name of the field, and continued to follow the wooden barrier all the way to the field’s entrance.

There were at least 5 teams of workers getting the field ready for Spring Baseball. Fences were being put up around the pitching area. Some work being done out in the outfield. Huge piles of infield dirt or clay or stone dust lay in the parking lot next to the field. Construction trucks and equipment out and around the perimeter of the field, that sort of scene. I wasn’t going to mingle with the workers, they had a job to do. So, I hurriedly walked up to the press box area, snapped a photo or two, then politely let myself out, as they say.

Really nice looking baseball field located on in an athletic area that included tennis courts and the amazing football stadium, William “Dick” Price Stadium. Typically, when I visit a field, I look for plaques, statues, signs, and baseballs around the perimeter of the field. But with the workers busy, I decided to wait until a Spring game to do more exploring. Norfolk State University Baseball plays a busy Spring schedule early on starting in mid-February. Here is the link to their game schedule – NSU Spartans Baseball.

Short visit, but sweet visit. Great looking campus, amazing baseball field that will look even more impressive in a few weeks time, easy to get to – Norfolk State University baseball games will most definitely be in my future plans for Hampton Roads Baseball experiences.
