Tracking Two Roby Minor League Baseball Players On Their Path To The Majors

In your family, were you the first to do something? The first one to earn a college degree or the first one to finish and publish a novel or the first to set foot in Australia? Being the first to do something in your family is special and should be cherished and celebrated throughout your family’s generations to follow. And for me, I am proud to say I was the first Roby in my immediate family to play in a college baseball game. So I have that…

Now, I have mentioned the website Baseball Reference and its awesomeness about a thousand times, so let’s make it 1001. Baseball Reference is awesome and I recently pulled up the site and typed “Roby” in the search bar. And guess what I found? A bunch of Roby’s have played in minor league baseball and two (Sean Roby and Tekoah Roby) are currently playing minor league baseball. To date, and according to Baseball Reference, no Roby has played or pitched or appeared in a Major League baseball game. So, one of these Roby’s would be the first to do so. Let’s look through the now retired Roby’s in Baseball Reference and see how they fared:

• Ellis Roby, drafted by the Atlanta Braves, 1985 – played 5 MILB seasons, made it as high as AAA Richmond Braves (1988)
• Michael Roby, drafted by the San Francisco Giants, 1967 – played 2 MILB seasons, made it as high as A Medford Giants (1967)

Ok, now let’s take a look at the two Roby baseball players currently in the minor leagues. Both Roby’s played last night – Tekoah pitched, Sean played 3b (separate games) how cool is that?!?

I have emails into both the Cardinals and Giants organizations to meet the Minor League Roby’s and will patiently await their responses. Next week, weather and schedule permitting, I am planning a trip to Hartford, CT to see the Hartford Yard Goats face the Richmond Flying Squirrels. And hope to catch a glimpse of a third baseman named Sean Roby.

Going a little further into my crazy baseball mind and how I think, how cool would it be for a Roby P to face a Roby batter? In the minors and yes, in the major leagues. The Cardinals Roby vs the Giants Roby – wow I would have to fly out to see that game!!! That would be a first indeed.
