Somewhere In The Crowd – A Mother’s Day Tribute To The Rhode Island Baseball Mom

Somewhere in the crowd, the mother of the pitcher on the mound, his team up 1 run with runners on second and third, 2 outs, 7th inning, partially shields her face while her son throws a 3-2 pitch to the cleanup hitter.

Somewhere in the crowd, the mother of the batter removes the blanket from her lap, throws her scarf over her left shoulder and then stands up and claps loudly as the baseball is released.

Somewhere in the crowd, the mother of the player in the dugout yet to appear in the game today wonders if her son has enough layers on and why isn’t he wearing the jacket you insisted he bring to this freezing cold, May morning game today.

Somewhere in the crowd, the mother of the first baseman is staring with great intent at the baserunner who just ran into her first baseman son, knocking him to the ground.

Somewhere in the crowd, the mother of the starting center fielder is holding back tears of joy in anticipation of his first Major League baseball game, perhaps his first Major League hit, perhaps his first Major League catch in the outfield.

Somewhere in the crowd, the mother of the Senior second baseman, who survived a second bout of breast cancer, didn’t miss a game after ringing the bell at the hospital, and is now seated in the front row of Senior Day getting ready to celebrate a memory with her son that will last a lifetime.

Somewhere in the crowd, the mother of the high school baseball coach coaching his son in a championship game sits back and is so proud of her son giving back to the game he loves.

Somewhere in the crowd, the baseball mom gives up her time for the betterment of another. Somewhere in the crowd, the baseball mom cheers and yells and encourages and questions why that was called a ball and later inquires how is that a foul ball, that was clearly fair, get some better glasses!!! Somewhere in the crowd, the baseball mom knows to bring a blanket to night games in the fall and to pack extra snacks and waters for doubleheaders and which is the fastest way home from Old Mountain Field so she can catch the “American Idol” season premiere. Somewhere in the crowd, a baseball mom is loving every moment of watching her baseball player enjoy the game of baseball, no matter what age he or she may be.

Happy Mother’s Day and thank you to all the Rhode Island Baseball Moms out there for all you do! Special Happy Mother’s Day to my mother Joanne, my wife Rachel, and my sister Erin – all amazing baseball Moms who so positively impacted my love of baseball my entire life.
