In a typical baseball season, April scrimmages turn to May league games and June playoff games and July District championship games. August is usually a quieter month on the youth baseball, amateur baseball, and collegiate baseball league schedule, simply because the games would have already been played in April, May, June, and July. Now let’s step into Baseball 2020 and the ultimate summer of baseball games, tournaments, and events happening, YES in August!!! The fields are packed with players and games every weekend so far this August and there is still more baseball to be played before school starts (distance learning or in person). August is typically the month where local youth baseball leagues begin recruiting players for their fall baseball season. And this year, is no exception.

Youth baseball leagues here in Rhode Island elected to play or not play this Spring due to the Coronavirus situation. Each league has its own board of directors and each league made the decision itself whether to play or not this Spring and Summer. Most leagues that elected not to have a Spring/Summer season did mention that Fall baseball was a good possibility for players in their league to participate in 2020. And those leagues, along with the leagues who elected to have a shortened Spring/Summer season, are now publishing posts on social media and talking up the Fall Baseball Season with their local players, coaches, families, and friends.

Fall baseball has always been a great season for development and skill enhancement for youth baseball. Typically, the fall baseball season is less about winning championships and more about trying a new position on the field or testing out a curveball on the mound. Fall baseball leagues, typically, are more travel related because the overall player and enrollment/participation is down from the Spring season, as some players elect to participate in other sports like football, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, just to name a few. The teams get to travel to other fields in and out of their normal district zones and that is a really cool experience for players and families. I am guessing that this fall baseball season will be very busy and very active because we are still in Phase 3 of ReOpening RI and some major contact sports are not allowed at this point in our state’s health plans.
