I Am So Excited To Announce Baseball Will Be Back…At Cardines Field

All Spring, 2020 and shortly into Summer, 2020 I have been anxiously awaiting for some positive news regarding the return of baseball…to Cardines Field. Cardines Field is one of the most historic baseball fields, not only in Rhode Island, but in the entire United States. It is one of the most unique Rhode Island Baseball Experiences for the casual fan or the mildly obsessed ones, like myself. There is a really cool article on the Newport Gulls’ website about the history of Cardines Field, which dates back to 1908. Here is that link – Cardines Field History.

A few weeks back, I saw a post on Instagram about the George Donnelly Sunset League and its hope to return this season. I reached out to the league’s administrator, Chris LaRose, last week and he remains optimistic about summer baseball, once Phase III of the Reopening RI plan takes effect. Their Facebook page is – George Donnelly Sunset League – where you can find updates on the season.

The Newport Gulls play in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. Their home field is Cardines and is one of the must see baseball events for baseball fans of all ages every summer. Unfortunately, the NECBL cancelled their 2020 Summer season in early Spring. Fortunately, Mike Falcone, Director of Baseball Operations for the Newport Gulls, took up the challenge of creating a collegiate summer baseball league. That challenge came to fruition this week as Falcone and others announced the Newport Collegiate Baseball League, pending the City of Newport and State of Rhode Island working within the guidelines of Phase III of the Reopening RI plan. If all goes well, Opening Day would be July 10th. Wow, that is very exciting news. Here is the website and social media pages for the Newport Collegiate Baseball League:

Supposedly, the professionals on Jersey St. in Boston are scheduled to come back at some point in July. Big news indeed. But not as big as baseball returning to historic Cardines Field. Collegiate baseball players who have been waiting out the various phases of Reopening RI will now have an opportunity to showcase their talents and continue to build their baseball resumes. I am so excited that there will be day and night games at Cardines. I am sure there will be safety guidelines including wearing masks, social distancing, and seating charts put into place so fans can be safe and healthy watching the games. And I will be so excited to attend games in Newport at Cardines Field once again this summer.
