Rhode Island Baseball Leagues Need Volunteers – Are You In?
Every year, youth sports such as Little League® baseball elect new and/or re-elect current positions on their executive board. Being a volunteer organization, these youth programs cannot exist without the many dedicated volunteers who help organize schedules, order uniforms, clean up the baseball fields, run the concession stand, and run these league so our kids can play youth baseball. It takes a “village” or “town” or “city” of volunteers every year to manage the many divisions of players (Tee ball to Senior Division), make sure the league is stocked with enough baseballs, are compliant with insurance, work with sponsors, and the tasks go on and on.

Here are a few examples of posts asking for volunteers to step forward in their community. Posts are from North Kingstown/Wickford Little League and Westerly National Little League. Read below:
“Many volunteers, myself included, have been with the league for 10 years or more. I see them at Field Day, at all the District and Friendship Tournaments, at the Cookouts, Home Run Derby, and we cheer on not only our kids but our friend’s kids as well. And now, for some of us, it is time to pass the awesome torch of being an NKW Little League Board Member to the next generation of parents. Parents of T-Ball and Coach Pitch players, even AAA and Majors Division, who can step into this incredible opportunity to help promote baseball in the town of North Kingstown should attend our next Executive Board Meeting. There are many important spots available, as many of our kids have now “graduated” out of Little League. We need new members to help bring ideas and energy and continue what so many of us have worked for many years to accomplish – a successful league with a wonderful set of fields and a fantastic baseball community.
If you have ever sat in the stands and said “if I were on the board, this would happen” or your son/daughter had an idea for a baseball event or you have an organizational side that you feel could benefit our league, you should attend our next board meeting.”
“Good Evening,
We will be holding an open board meeting for our WNLL (Westerly National Little League) families this Saturday Sept. 15th at 5:30PM at Trombino field! This is a great way for you to learn how, and what volunteer opportunities are available in this program. Our program to me has always been more than just teaching the game of baseball. Trombino field is a place where we can gather with friends and families to spend time together, make new friends, and watch our children play. I feel organized sports is a great place for a young athlete to learn about team work, sportsmanship, and leadership. There are many reason why playing sports can help us grow physically, mentally, and challenge us to be a better person.
Without our volunteers we would not have a little league program in town. This program is self run and there are no paid positions on the board. The volunteers in our program donate their time to take care of the fields, run concessions, work on clinics, organize events, and run the baseball season. We need people in our community to step forward and participate to create a successful program! I hope you take this opportunity to come and take part in this program.
Sincerely,
Ken Nicholson
WNLL President”
If you are interested in volunteering as a media/information officer, safety officer, umpires coordinator, sponsorship coordinator, fields supervisor, or one of the divisional commissioners, please contact your local Little League® office. Trust me, it is a rewarding position that you will never regret signing up for. And it gives your town, your league the opportunity to promote youth sports and give kids an opportunity to play the great game of baseball for years to come.
