Sally Eddy Tournament Hits 20 Year Mark This Summer

Just got this press release from the 2018 Sally Eddy Tournament Director – Sean Wiggins.  Please note, the Sally Eddy Tournament is in its 20th year and the contributions by Sean, Jaime Banspach, and George Russell have been tremendous for Rhode Island Youth Baseball, especially Warwick North Little League.  Everyone I know always has a blast at this tournament, which is well run and the competition is outstanding.  I know that North Kingstown and Wickford Little Leagues have had an amazing experience over the years.  Here is more from Director Sean Wiggins on this year’s Sally Eddy Tournament.  Please note, there is a downloadable form in this article or you can email Sean directly for more information at sallyeddy2018@gmail.com.

Warwick North Little League  will be hosting the 20th annual Sally Eddy Memorial Friendship Tournament which will be held on Monday July 30th- Friday August 6th 2018  and ending on Saturday and Sunday August 11th & 12Th, 2018.  Sally Eddy was a dedicated instructional league manager and volunteer who loved working with children and she loved baseball.  Sally passed away while a volunteer at the former Warwick National . This tournament is to honor Sally and all Little League volunteers who are no longer with us.

Each team is guaranteed 3 games, and if you come in 1st or 2nd in your pool, a 4th game on the final day.

The tournament this year is only for players who were NOT on a district all-star team.  Players who were selected for an all-star team, but were ineligible for or opted out due to any reason, should not be in this tournament as well.

There are two divisions.  Each team is asked to carry 11 to 14 rostered players.  The first division is the 9/8 division which is open only to major and minor division players who are 2018 league age 9 and 8.  This is really a 9/8 division but If needed to assist leagues in filling out their rosters, 7’s are allowed. They must come from your “kid pitch” division, and be equally as skilled as your 8 year olds on the roster.  Teams will be limited to no more than two (2) 7’s to maintain the high level of play commonly found in this division. To summarize, you can have any combination of players with little league ages 9 and 8 and up to two 7’s if needed.  Teams may have all 9’s if they choose.

The second division is the 11/10 division and will be open to major and minor division players who are 2018 league age 11 and 10.  Each team is asked to carry 11 to 14 rostered players.

Games this year will be at Warwick North fields.  All fields have lights and scoreboards and score booths.  We run full snack bars. Please do not bring food to the games.  The snackbar proceeds help the host leagues offset the cost of running the tournament.  Batting cages are available for warm-ups.

The entrance fee is $225 dollars if your league enters one team and an extra $175  per team for each additional team.  The entrance fee proceeds will be used to purchase awards and help with the cost of running the tournament, umpires, baseballs and field preparation.

First Place and Finalist (2nd place) teams will receive trophies that designate their placement in the tournament. Only Third and 4th place will receive medals.  The First Place, Finalist and the 3rd place league will also receive a plaque.

Please complete and return the enclosed entry form and return it together with your entry fee to the address shown on the form by Saturday July 14, 2018.  Both divisions are limited to eight (8) teams each.  You may enter the same team(s) in the same division(s) as the previous season.  If you wish to enter additional teams you must contact me to see if there is room or go on a waiting list.  After July 1, 2018, we will start inviting other Little Leagues in District III and other districts as needed. The first 8 received in each will be assigned.  Please do not assume that if you had a team in the tournament last year there will be a spot saved again this year.  A representative of your league MUST contact the tournament director with your leagues desire to participate this year asap.

Finally, there will be a tournament managers meeting the week prior to the tournament on July 26 to go over the rules.  Rosters with player’s names and 2018 league age will be turned in at the managers meeting.  It is assumed your league will send players of the correct age and eligibility for your tournament teams. The intent is to only have 8 teams in each division.
