Greg Grall Returns to Coach Gulls in 2018

NEWPORT, R.I.- The Newport Gulls are excited to announce the addition of Gregory Grall to their 2018 Coaching Staff. Grall served as Manager Mike Coombs’ Hitting Coach during the 2006 New England Collegiate Baseball (NECBL) Season and will return in the same capacity for the upcoming summer.

Grall helped lead Newport to 32 wins in 2006, which is still the most by any franchise in an NECBL season. In that same season, Grall’s hitters littered the league-leaderboard as the 2006 NECBL MVP Jim Murphy (Washington St.) hit .358 with 40 RBI and 94 Total Bases while Matt Bouchard (Georgetown) scored 29 runs and Chris Dominguez (Louisville) hit 11 home runs, pacing all NECBL hitters.

Coach Grall, a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee, has held coaching and consulting positions throughout all levels of professional baseball. Grall was the Boston Red Sox Bullpen Coach in 2012 and has also worked with Cy Young Winner Jake Arrietta, All-Star Pitchers Mark MelanconAndrew Miller, and B.J. Ryan, as well as many other notable Major Leaguers during career.

In addition to his work in the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates, Baltimore Orioles, and Cincinnati Reds organizations, Grall was the Hitting and 3rd Base Coach for South Africa in the 2006 World Baseball Classic. This was not Grall’s only experience in the international ranks as he has also completed consulting assignments with Greece, Costa Rica, and the Netherlands.

Grall brings a tremendous wealth of knowledge with him to Newport and will be an integral component on the Gulls quest for a league-leading seventh Fay Vincent Cup.

The Newport Gulls, members of the 13-team New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded as the Rhode Island Gulls in 1998 in Cranston, R.I., before moving to Newport in 2001. In addition to recruiting, fielding, and developing a team of the nation’s top collegiate baseball athletes and attracting 50,000 fans annually to Cardines Field, the predominantly volunteer organization strives to benefit the community of Newport County via summer camps, reading programs, fundraisers, scholarships, and charitable donations – totaling over $1 million since 2001. The Gulls are six-time champions of the NECBL – the winningest franchise in league history – and were ranked as the overall No. 1 summer collegiate baseball team in the country by Perfect Game USA in 2012.
