The Case For The Space Saving Single Cable Column

In my experience working with first time personal trainers, budget and space are two of the biggest issues.  On one hand, a personal trainer has the knowledge, drive, and enthusiasm to get their business up and running.  Maybe they are fresh out of college or have recently obtained a fitness certification.  However, quality fitness equipment costs money as does renting or leasing a space. Often times, personal trainers need to think outside the box in terms of space and equipment if start up money is not available.

One solution I have advised personal trainers as well as physical therapists is the single cable column.  In the photo above is an example – the Life Fitness Single Cable Column.  The Life Fitness single cable column is space efficient and can be placed in a corner of a room or against a wall.  It has one column with an adjustable set of pulleys.  The pulleys attached to a selectorized weight stack through a cable and pulley system.  This allows the user to select a weight that is comfortable for them, depending on the exercise they are performing.  Once the weight is selected, you can adjust the cable column’s pulleys to “create” your exercise.

As a personal trainer or therapist, you can create hundreds of exercises for your clients on a single cable column machine, such as the Life Fitness unit shown.  Adjust the cable high for exercises that require pulling down against resistance – such as lat pulldown, triceps pushdown, and shoulder/deltoid movements.  Adjust the cable to the middle of the column for exercises such as standing rows, chest flies, or abdominal movements.  Adjust the cable to the bottom of the column for exercises such as leg curls, hip movements, and arm curls.  Or, you can use your personal trainer knowledge base to create exercises for core fitness, sports specific training, and general conditioning.

The Life Fitness Single Cable Column shown has two individual pulleys.  This helps create a more user defined feel when using the machine.  In other words, it allows the exercise to feel more like using a bar or dumbbell which is not attached via a cable to anything.  There is a lot more freedom of movement with this dual pulley action and you tend to use more muscle groups in the exercise you are performing.  Overall, a cable driven system is a safe way for your clients to exercise.

If you happen to work with disabled athletes or plan on working with a population that needs wheelchair accessible equipment, you are in luck with this Life Fitness Single Cable Column.  The wide support bars allow for a wheelchair to be wheeled in.  In addition, the support bars can be used for stability during your client’s exercise session.  This is a great feature on this Life Fitness model.

So, if you are in the market for a space saving unit with tons of upside, I would highly recommend a single cable column, such as the Life Fitness Single Cable Column.  This Life Fitness model has a dual pulley system which gives the user a very smooth workout.  The adjustable pulleys go up and down the single column to create exercises such as lat pulldown, abdominal twists, leg lifts, chest flies, and many more.  You can workout your client for a sport such as golf or tennis or lacrosse on this machine.  It fits into the corner of a room and takes up very little room.  Honestly, it takes the place of 20 to 30 machines which makes it ideal for a space starved studio or fitness center.  This Life Fitness Single Cable Column is one of the best I have seen on the commercial market.  If you are interested in learning more about it, email me at  Or fill out a contact form and I will get back to you with pricing and availability.
