A quote from the mission statement of the North Kingstown Food Pantry states that the board members, volunteers, and all associated with the food pantry “share a vision to eliminate hunger in our community.”  Part of our community includes school age children and the North Kingstown Food Pantry has a program to help.  It’s called “Blessings in a Backpack.”  This program is a nationally recognized effort to combat childhood hunger, which some research believes contributes to poor academic performance and an inability to function properly in school.  According to their website, www.blessingsinabackpack.org, “Blessings in a Backpack started with just two schools in 2005 and now serves over 76,000 students in 800 schools spread throughout 44 states and the District of Columbia.”  Information about donating to this program, which is currently offered at SMH Quidnessett Elementary and Davisville Middle Schools here in North Kingstown, click on this link.

One important notice about donating and/or dropping off food at the North Kingstown Food Pantry.  Per the official website of the North Kingstown Food Pantry, “Please DO NOT drop off food at the pantry when the pantry is not open.  The RI Community Food Bank does not allow us to use food that was dropped off unattended.”  Food donations may be dropped off at the Little Red School House between 10 am-2 pm Monday-Friday & the 4th Saturday of the month from 10 am- Noon.  Evening times & other times need an appointment!

  1. Hopefully, the NK Food Pantry will be featured in the Our Town/North Kingstown program. Some of the same volunteers have been at it for 20-30 years. It serves not only those who are hungry, but also, those in need. Need occurs when food stamps are gone and when extra family members need a meal. Give what you would want-give often.
