Today is Thursday, March 17th – St. Patrick’s Day. Being of Irish descent (my middle name is actually Patrick), I began my day doing some research on a cool story about baseball as it pertains to Ireland. I mean, I’m Irish, I should write an Irish baseball story on St. Patrick’s Day, right? Maybe post some photos of my Irish heritage or the Irish sweater my Auntie Mrs (aka Betty Cross) knitted for me when I was just a lad of 14, that I still hold very dear to my heart? Perhaps, but wouldn’t you rather read about 4 gigantic wins by our local college baseball programs? More specifically URI, Salve Regina, Bryant, and Roger Williams and their big time wins on Wednesday. With talent like this, who needs luck??? Yeah, I thought so. So without any further interruption, let’s take a look at the box scores from yesterday:
URI bats starting the comeback in the 6th inning. Down 6-1, URI would score 2 in the 6th, another 3 in the 8th, then a gigantic blast on Opening Day at Beck Field by CF Jack Cucinotta – a Grand Slam to walk off and secure the 10-6 victory. RI local baseball talent making an impact – Warwick’s Alex Ramirez – 1 for 3; Cumberland’s Addison Kopack – 1 for 4, 1 of the 4 coming home in the grand slam; Rhode Island Pitchers galore – Ashaway’s Sean Sposato, South Kingstown’s Bo Brutti and Broc French (who notched the win).
Ouch, this one hurts but only because of the losing team, my alma mater Springfield College. 13 hits, 12 runs for Salve – very impressive win down in the RussMatt Invitational Tournament in Auburndale, FL.
How about 7-0 for the Roger Williams University baseball team??? What an impressive way to start the season. Rhode Island locals in action – Cumberland’s Alex Lavallee – 2 for 4, 3 RBIs; Bristol’s Connor Padavich – 1.1 innings of work, no runs.
Another great offensive performance by Bryant – 11 hits, 12 runs. RI baseball locals having a day – Warwick’s Matt Woods – 3 for 5; Portsmouth’s M.T. Morrissey an inning of work, no runs with a K.
A four leaf clover salute to baseball – Have faith in your teammates, keep hope alive that the baseball gods will be kind, love and respect the game of baseball, and maybe with the talent you send out to the field and with a bit of luck, you will come out today with a win!
