As the fog continues to blanket the view out of my baseball office window, I thought I would shed some light on some recent Rhode Island Baseball News. Not bad for a baseball writer huh??? Fall championships were competed in and champions were crowned. A few AAU teams are looking for players to complete rosters for 2023. And a group of Rhode Island Father/Son teams competed in Arizona against other Father/Son teams from around the USA. Oh and we may have a Classical High School Baseball alumni hoisting a World Series trophy in about a week or so. (Harper, Wheeler, and Realmuto may have something to say about that.) Here are just a few of the posts and messages I received this week from the Rhode Island Baseball Community:

From RI Rays Jim Agnew: RI Rays 13U 2023 Spring Team is looking for a pitcher to round off our 2023 Spring Team. We will be doing the AAU League play as well as 5 Tournaments 2 Local and 3 out of state tournaments. Delaware (Sports on the Beach), Maryland or Florida and one other out of state tournament TBD. If you like to tryout and challenge yourself against talented teams outside of RI and take your game to a new level we have a spot for you.

From ATC’s Kris Hallene: We are throwing out some feelers to see the interest in forming a 9u/10u team – most likely combined at this time – for the spring season. 10u age restriction is not being 11 before 5/1 2023. 10u plays on a regular little league sized field. The program would include winter workouts at the ATC facility in Pawtucket, gear, player fees, etc. The tuition is being worked out at this time and we will have that information shortly. Huge thanks to RISMBL President Frank Ribezzo for getting me this information. Two Rhode Island teams recently competed in the MSBL Father/Son Tournament in Mesa, Arizona. “The RI / Puerto Rican Cardinals won the American division in the tournament.  The Yankees ended up 2-2 narrowly missing the playoffs on a tie breaker.”

Coming soon…the results from my question to the Rhode Island Baseball Community – Can An Above Average Rec Player Make It Up The Baseball Ladder Without Travel Ball. Here is one Rhode Island Baseball Community member’s take on the subject:

“Yes and No, hypothetically yes they could. There are still D3 or even community programs that take walk-on players. Realistically no, for the same reasons this player is not playing travel. Unless he is going to college on a scholarship or with government funded programs he is in the same situation as needing to work and not being able to play. College programs even at D3 are demanding on time. If he did have the opportunity to go to college then yes I believe he could “walk-on” and play. From a personal perspective I did exactly that, I did not play elite travel or even my HS senior year and went to a D3 school made the team as a freshman and started all 4 years. I was able to go to college on academics and loans. I worked summers and school vacations and even took jobs in the fall/winter so I could play (softball not baseball and it was 20 years ago lol).“
