Sunday Morning Baseball Featuring Devils 18U vs CCRI At Fell Field

Fell Baseball Field is located on the Warwick campus of the Community College of Rhode Island, or CCRI. The field is located at the far end of the large parking lot, which is to the left of the main buildings and gymnasiums. It is set down the hill, so it is difficult to see once you enter the parking lot. Chris Genao of the Rhode Island Devils Baseball organization emailed me this week that his 18U club would be facing the CCRI Fall Baseball team, so I took the drive to Warwick to check it out.

I spotted some bleacher seating just past the Fell Field plaque and took a seat to watch the RI Devils 18U team scrimmage the CCRI Fall Baseball Team. With the field located down the hill from the parking area, these bleachers gave me a nice view of the field.

From the bleacher area, I could see the bullpens and batting cages located in the left field foul line area. Then, I watched one of the CCRI hitters hit one over the left field fence for a home run. From what I was told, it was hit by Houston Astros top prospect Jeremy Pena’s little brother.

Sunday was an ideal day for baseball. The sun was shining bright, not a cloud in the sky, slight breeze to center field. I walked around to the backstop area of Fell Field to watch a few innings.

This Devils 18U vs CCRI game had their respective catchers calling balls and strikes, instead of a home plate umpire. The honor system of calling players safe or out on the base paths was also in play. These teams were very familiar with each other. One coach mentioned to me that a few Devils players and an assistant coach are on the CCRI baseball team.

Despite the teams knowing each other pretty well, the play on the field was very competitive. Both teams hit the ball hard, stole bases, took extra bases on throwing errors, and played hard. I took a spot up the hill to watch a inning or two of the game. Despite only one set of bleachers that I could see, there were tons of great views all over Fell Field.

Big thanks to Chris Genao for inviting me to watch this Devils vs CCRI game. It was great to see baseball being played at CCRI again, they have not had an opportunity to play collegiate baseball for over 2 years now (because of Covid-19 restrictions). And I got to watch some big time baseball talent from both teams.

  1. Nice article! I would like to invite you to our field in Seekonk behind the Kevin Hurley Middle School. Over the last two years we have turned the field into what I consider one of the nicest infields in the area. We consistently get positive comments from opposing teams. Our Seekonk 14U team is hosting a doubleheader on October 16th starting at 10AM.
