Through the GameChanger fan page of the Northeast Reds 13U baseball club, I spotted a series of games in Connecticut for the weekend of April 10th and 11th. The games were listed as “War At the Shore.” I was curious to learn more about War At The Shore, so I contacted Joe Zrenda via their website, www.warattheshoretournaments.com. I discovered that The War At The Shore Baseball Tournaments are a popular destination for baseball families, including teams from Rhode Island, starting in early Spring. Joe and I exchanged emails and here is an excerpt of that conversation:

RIBBE: Joe, can you tell me more about War At The Shore and your history?

JOE: Hi Noel,  thank you for reaching out.  We are entering our 18th year with War at the Shore Baseball Tournaments.  We usually hold about 12 tournaments per season, running from April through September.  We have divisions running from 9u to 19u.  Our early and late season are usually smaller, but in the late spring and summer, the events are much larger.  On average we have 300 teams come each year.

RIBBE: Anything the fans and/or families need to know up front?  Will you have regular operations such as snack shack, access to restrooms, things like that?

JOE: We follow the state’s (Connecticut) Covid-19 rules, do not operate a snack stand, but allow fans to bring their own food in.  Most fields have full bathrooms, but on some occasions we are forced to use porta potties.  We have a site director on site at all times to monitor games and prep the fields in between games.

RIBBE: Can you tell me which fields and their locations you will be playing on?

JOE: For most events, our games are played in East Lyme, Old Lyme, Waterford and New London (Connecticut).  For our larger event we add fields in Norwich and Stonington (Connecticut).  

RIBBE: And what are the War At The Shore champions receiving – medals, trophies, all of the above?

JOE: The team gets a First and runner up trophies and players receive either a gold or silver medal.

The War At The Shore Spring Opener is scheduled for Saturday, April 10th and Sunday, April 11th. According to their website, www.warattheshoretournaments.com, each team is guaranteed a 3 game minimum.
