Big Announcement – Charity Bike Ride from Old Mountain Field to Cardines To Support Rhode Island Food Bank

Last fall, I had the great fun and pleasure to explore over 59 baseball fields and sports complexes here in Rhode Island on my bicycle. The “Trek Around RI Baseball Fields” so expertly coined by my friend Gary Hornung, took me from Westerly to Woonsocket, North Kingstown to North Smithfield, Warwick to Tiverton and so many great places in between. It was a blast and I enjoyed every field and every experience last fall.

This fall, I am teaming up with the Rhode Island Food Bank to help raise awareness and funds for the many Rhode Island families who go hungry every day. Families that have sons and/or daughters who play youth sports like baseball. Who participate in league tournaments and home run derby events and love the game of baseball. According to the fact and figures page on the RI Food Bank’s website (www.rifoodbank.org) “Each month, 53,000 Rhode Islanders receive food assistance at these agencies. 66% of households served by food pantries include seniors and/or children.” In your league, maybe on your son/daughter’s team, there are kids struggling with this need for food.

So, this fall’s bike trek around Rhode Island will have a special purpose. Weather permitting, I plan on riding from one iconic field to another iconic field on Sunday, November 1st. Wakefield’s Old Mountain Field is host to South Kingstown Little League, South Kingstown High School, The Ocean State Waves, and countless other youth and amateur leagues. I played on this field when I was in high school and just find it to be so incredible that it has stood the test of time. Newport’s Cardines Field is one of the most iconic baseball fields in the entire USA. Every baseball season, it hosts the Newport Gulls, the Sunset League, Newport and Middletown school games, as well as tons of other local baseball leagues. There are 65 miles that separate Old Mountain Field and Cardines Field. 65 miles of towns and cities and communities that have community members in need of food assistance this year. My goal is to ride this 65 miles, raise awareness for the need for food assistance programs, and to help raise funds for the Rhode Island Food Bank to help some of our Rhode Island Baseball Community members in need.

Here is the fundraising page for donations. There will be updates as they become available. Any businesses or corporate donations will get a plug on my social media pages.
