The RIBBE Visits East Greenwich Little League’s Church St. Baseball Field
East Greenwich, RI has so many fantastic baseball fields. Cragan Field, located off Reilly Ave., is a popular field for not only East Greenwich Little League, but has hosted district and state championship baseball games in recent years. Cole Middle School and East Greenwich High School have “big” fields for their student-athletes as well as host AAU, Junior and Senior Little League, and Connie Mack league games in the summer and fall. I have seen practices and games at Eldridge Elementary School off Division St. in years passed. And recently, I visited a very unique neighborhood baseball field on Church St.
I happened upon the Church St. baseball field sort of by accident. When I was sending out information regarding a recent baseball tournament, there was a typo in the press release about which East Greenwich field was to be used. Having seen Little League games mostly played at Cragan Field for EG players, I wasn’t aware of this Church St. location and went by to take a look. Turns out, it was just a typo and the games were played at Cragan. No worries, as I got to check out and explore a really interesting neighborhood baseball park.
As I typically do, I walked around the park to find interesting plaques, memorials, views, and places to watch a baseball game. This Church St. park had a really cool sitting area situated under a large tree with two park benches and a memorial plaque. The plaque stated that this baseball park was seated on the Kentish Guards Drill Field, a training area for soldiers during the Revolutionary War era. Sitting down on the park bench, with the entire baseball field in clear view, with the sun nicely shaded by this large tree, makes this spot one of the best places to see a baseball game in all of Rhode Island.
With no outfield fences, single bench dugouts with screens, and an open seating format (with the exception of one single bleacher), this neighborhood baseball park had a really nice old-time baseball feel to it. Just show up and play baseball on a beautiful field with the American Flag waving just past centerfield. It was a really cool visit to the Church St. baseball field in East Greenwich.
