I have had so much fun on my 2019 Rhode Island Baseball Field Bike Relay Ride. To date, I have visited fields from Little Compton through East Bay and back down memory lane in my home town of North Kingstown. There are so many great baseball fields and communities here in Rhode Island to get to and I can’t wait to share my tour with you through story and video.

Day 4 started at North Kingstown’s Lischio Field in Slocum. Years ago, the field next to Slocum Fire Station was just that, a big field. With the creative talents of so many and the baseball minds of Paul Lischio and others to follow, Lischio Field became a reality in the Slocum section of North Kingstown. For 20 years, Lischio Field has served as a top notch baseball field for Slocum Baseball Club and more recently North Kingstown Wickford Little League and the North Kingstown High School baseball program. With the collective efforts of Jack Pyne, Ray LeBlanc, and Mark Cahill (just to name a few), Lischio Field is one of the best kept baseball fields in all of Rhode Island.

From Lischio Field, I headed south (I think, maybe southeast) down country roads, past sod farms, crossing over 138 where University of Rhode Island sits, and finishing up in Wakefield’s Old Mountain Field. Old Mountain Field is home to South Kingstown Little League, South Kingstown High School Baseball, as well as the Ocean State Waves of the New England Collegiate Baseball League. I played on this field as a member of my American Legion team back in the late 1980’s. I coached my son Harrison on this field recently for his Junior Little League team. It has an open seating format with tons of bleacher seats and grassy spots along the first and third base lines. It is a fantastic field to watch a baseball game, no matter what level of play is on the field.

Whenever possible, I like to use bike paths to help me get from field to field. The bike paths here in Rhode Island are a safe way to travel by bike from town to town. In this case, I hopped on the bike path for the short ride from Old Mountain Field over to Sprague Park, home of Narragansett Little League.

Sprague Park is one of the most impressive recreational facilities in all of Rhode Island. It is a massive section of beautiful landscape located just under a mile from Narragansett Beach. It features tennis courts, huge playground and picnic area, as well as a Little League® size and High School size field. I also played American Legion games at Sprague Field, as this was my home field for my Post 39 team. Now, I have the great pleasure of watching my nephews – Jackson, Finley, and soon Harvey – play baseball, make awesome catches, swing the bat, and be a part of the baseball tradition in my family. Sprague Park is a must see and must visit park in Rhode Island.

Back onto the bike path and still heading south, I made my way into downtown Wakefield, past Paul Masse and South County Orthopedics, up the hill to make a right onto Tuckertown Road. About a mile down on the left is the incredible Tuckertown Park. You could spend a day at Tuckertown Park and probably never get to everything this beautiful piece of land has to offer. Soccer fields galore, 2 baseball fields, huge playground, walking trails – all in excellent condition no matter what season I visit Tuckertown. My sons have played fall baseball games at Tuckertown for years and I always loved visiting this South Kingstown treasure. As I was filming, there were a few young players practicing on the fields. No coaches, no parents, just two kids who love baseball getting in a few swings on a late Sunday morning. Pretty cool to see that.

Day 4 was a beautiful ride from North Kingstown to South Kingstown with stops at Lischio Field, Old Mountain Field, Sprague Park, and Tuckertown Park. We are so blessed here in Rhode Island to have such incredible recreational facilities for our baseball teams to learn the game of baseball and enjoy all that nature has to offer.

Next stop on my Rhode Island Baseball Field Relay Bike Ride will be Westerly National Little League and Trombino Field. All for now…
