Local North Kingstown Coach Collects Sports Equipment for South Dakota Tribe
A fellow North Kingstown Wickford Little League coach and friend of mine sent me a great email last night. Coach Dave Andrews has been coaching with me (and against me) for close to 5 years now. He and I worked together this fall for NKW Friendship Tournaments and Juniors Division Fall Baseball. Dave is a proud member of the Veteran Service Corps and serves as their secretary. His charitable work includes Rhode Island but also a special project in South Dakota. Here is more from Dave Andrews:
Veteran Service Corps secretary and North Kingstown/Wickford Little League coach Dave Andrews presented NKWLL President Arnie Sarazen with a certificate of appreciation in recognition of the leagues generous contribution of sports equipment and uniforms to the Cheyenne River Sioux (Lakota) Tribe in South Dakota. VSC is working with the tribe to help promote healthy choices for youth and to combat youth suicide.
Veteran Service Corps (VSC) teamed up with Rochelle Ripley and her organization hawkwing, Inc.(www.hawkwing.org) and the Tolland, CT Little League to collect equipment. hawkwing collects donations and sends Christmas gifts, care packages, and other necessities to the reservation twice a year. The donated sports equipment and uniforms were sent off to the reservation on tractor trailer trucks donated by World Fulfillment Logistics. All of this was coordinated through Rochelle and hawkwing.
Veteran Service Corps is a non-profit organization whose mission is to engage veterans, out of their shared oath of service to our country, to improve our communities and protect constitutional rights. VSC has been given stewardship of a 29-acre property by the Cheyenne River tribe in Promise South Dakota. They are currently working to refurbish the ranch house on the property and make it 100% energy independent with renewable sources. Once this is accomplished, VSC will offer classes and certification in the installation of solar systems to tribal members and veterans, in addition to other programs that they are developing and carrying out.
